MacMail Secure Email Setup

Secure Email Configuration

This article will show you how to properly configure your email client to your 3dcart mail server using secure port requirements on Mac Mail.

MacMail Secure Email Setup

If you currently have an email account set up in your MacMail email program, we recommend following the steps outlined in Editing an Existing Email Account Profile.

However, if you are adding a brand new email account for yourself or a new employee, please follow the steps involved in Adding a New Email Account.

Adding a New Email Account

Use these steps if you are adding a brand new e-mail account profile to your Mac Mail.

  1. Go to your System Preferences/Settings interface
  2. Then click on the "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" icon.

You will see a window similar to the following image. If you have a regular email account already created on the computer, it will be listed here in the left hand pane, while on the right you will see preset email configuration buttons for services like Gmail, Yahoo, etc.

To continue:

  1. Click on the button towards the bottom of the right hand pane which reads "Add other Account..."
  2. Within the smaller window that opens, click "Add a Mail Account" then click "Create"

  1. Then fill out the Full Name, Email Address, and Password fields as applicable to your account.
  2. Click Create when you're done filling in the fields

At this point, Mac Mail will attempt to "discover" the settings for the mail server to help along with the process. However, you will likely receive a message stating that "Mail couldn't discover the account settings..." This is expected. Just click on the "Continue" button.

On the next window, you will specify your incoming mail server information.

  1. Select your Account Type as either POP or IMAP

Note
Check with your IT personnel if you are not sure whether you are using POP or IMAP. Most people use POP.

  1. Enter a Description to serve as a label/nickname to the Mail Account. This will help identify the email account when checking mail or otherwise updating settings.
  2. Enter your incoming mail server and login information (See below or refer to your welcome email)

Additional Information
When specifying your email logon User Name, be sure to use the entire email address. (i.e. user@domain.com)

  1. Click Continue when ready

Note
During this part, you may receive a warning about the server's security. This is due to the entered domain not having its own SSL certificate and the warning is just advising that the security certificate for mail.[your-domain].com could not be found.  However, since you are on a shared mailserver, the SSL certificate is in fact present; it's just installed on 3dcart's mailserver name.

The warning itself may be ignored because the server still requires authentication and is therefore secure in that respect. However, if you would like to eliminate the warning altogether, you can use the appropriate mail.3dcartstores.com for your account. Please refer to your welcome email for the appropriate 3dcartstore.com mailserver to use.

Now you will configure your outgoing mail server.

  1. Fill out the appropriate fields with your outgoing mail server information, username and password.

Again, be sure to specify the user name as the full email address.

  1. Place a mark on the "Use Authentication" checkbox.

You will then be shown a summary of the account.

  1. Click "Create" to finish.

The email account is created, but there is still one more step involved to make the email use SSL for outgoing mail.

To continue:

Open up your Mac Mail program. Incoming messages may begin appearing in your inbox.

  1. Within the left-hand side of the mail program, click on your account's "inbox" listing.
  2. Then click on the Settings icon located at the very bottom.
  3. Select "Edit [email account]" where [email account] is what you named the profile.

Note
You may need to click on the Show/Hide button to see the Left hand pane with the inbox listing.

  1. On the subsequent window, select the "Accounts" icon to view the account information
  2. Click on the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) button
  3. In the small drop down, click "Edit SMTP Server List"

You will be shown a smaller window with specifics of the SMTP server. Be sure to select your account's mail.[your-domain].com SMTP server at the top. Then, if it isn't already selected, click on the "Advanced" button.

  1. Place a mark in the "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) checkbox.
  2. Make sure Authentication is listed as "Password"
  3. Click "OK" to complete the process.

Your 3dcart email is now set up and ready to use in Mac Mail

  1. Open up your Mac Mail program.

  1. On the subsequent window, select the "Accounts" icon to view the account information.

You will be shown a window displaying the specifics of the Mail Account (name, email, pasword, etc). At the top you will see three buttons labeled "Account Information" "Mailbox Behaviors" and "Advanced"

  1. Click on the "Advanced" button as sown below

Now you'll see the advanced options for the incoming mail server.

  1. Place a mark in the "Use SSL" checkbox.
  2. Specify the Port as 995 (If using IMAP; use Port 993)
  3. Set the authentication method to either "Authenticated POP" or "Password"

Now we will set up the outgoing mail server to use SSL.

To proceed, click on the "Account Information" button to go back to the account settings page we were at a moment ago.

Proceed with the following:

  1. Click on the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) button

Your 3dcart email is now updated and ready to use in Mac Mail
