How do I mark Customers as Tax-Exempt if I am Using Avalara?

For merchants utilizing the Avalara module for automated tax calculations, there are two different ways to mark customers as tax-exempt. The two methods used will vary depending on whether or not you are using their Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) program, so ensure you are using the right method.

For merchants not making use of Avalara's Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) program, you can mark individual customers as tax-exempt within your Shift4Shop store. To do so:

  1. Go to Customers > Customer List
  2. Open the customer record you are looking for (either using the list or searching for it)
  3. Click on the Non Taxable checkbox
  4. Save your changes

For merchants who are currently enrolled in Avalara's Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) program, you will need to use the Exemption Certificate Management system (ECM) on Avalara's side to manage tax exemption status. If you are not familiar with how to do this, we recommend consulting with Avalara support directly for better assistance.

If you are utilizing this, you need to confirm that your customer's email address in the Avalara ECM matches the same email address within your Store Manager for their customer record. If they do not, that may cause customers to be charged tax in cases where they should otherwise be exempt.

Please note that it is the merchant's responsibility to collect and verify exemption certificates from customers. Shift4Shop cannot assist with this particular process.

Important
It is important to keep in mind that if you are using the SST program, the Non Taxable setting in the customer record within Shift4Shop will not work. Please ensure you are using Avalara's ECM if you are enrolled in this program.
