How do I set up a free product promotion?

With the built-in promotion manager, you can set up a variety of special offers and giveaways to shoppers to entice them to visit your store. Here's how to use the promotion manager to set up a free product promotion by using the "Fixed Price" product function of it.

Additional Information
In this example, we'll set up a promotion where the shopper is given a free product when they add a qualifying product to their cart. In other words, buy Item A and get Item B free of charge.

For this tutorial, we'll be concentrating on the "Fixed Price Product" function and we'll list specific settings for the other functions of the promotion manager. However, you are free to tailor these other settings as needed for your purposes. These variable settings will be marked with a red asterisk (*) for your reference. Please review the full Promotion Manager tutorial here for specifics on the other settings described in this article.

  1. Log into your 3dcart Online Store Manager
  2. Using the left hand navigation menu, go to Marketing ->Promotion Manager
  3. Click the "+Add Promotion" button located along the top right of the page to begin
  4. Under Promotion Name, type in a name for your promotion*
  5. Then specify a Promotion Description that you'd like to appear for the shopper when the promotion is activated*
  6. Next, specify a start date and end date for the promotion*
  7. Under "Promotion type" click on the "Automatic Promo" radio button*
  8. Leave the discount field blank*
  9. Click on the "+Save" button to proceed

Once you click on the +Save button, the page will refresh and you will see a page with two halves. On the left hand side of the page you will see the basics of the promotion you just created (with the information described in the steps above). Below this section you will see two additional fields labeled "Total Allowed Uses" and "Uses per Customer"

  1. For "Total Allowed Uses" leave this at the default value of 999*
  2. For "Uses Per Customer" leave this at the default value of 1*

While viewing this page, you will see a section on the right hand side with two sub-settings labeled "Promotion Offers" and "Promotion Rules." These sub-settings will let you tailor how the promotion will work:

  • Promotion Offers
are used to specify what the promotion will give to the shopper
  • Promotion Rules
are used to specify what needs to happen in the shopper's cart in order for the promotion to trigger

Let's set up the rules first.

  1. Click on the + icon located next to Promotion Rules to expand the section
  2. For "Requires Coupon," leave this option marked as the "No" radio button*
  3. Coupon Code will also be left blank*
  4. Discount Group will be left as "None" in the drop down menu*
  5. Country and State will both be left as "All" respectively*
  6. Under Order Quantity and Order Amount, we will leave these at their default values of 0 (for min) and 9999 (for max)*
  7. Under "Options" mark the "Non-Stackable" checkbox*
  8. Under Excluded Items, leave the default "None" radio button selected*
  9. The field labeled "Applies if Products from these Categories are in the Basket" will also be left blank*

Tip
Don't forget! If the steps outlined above have a red asterisk (*) on them, it means these settings can be set however you need for your specific purposes. Please be sure to review the other available articles relating to the Promotion Manager for information on each specific setting.

So far in this process we've left most of the settings at their default values. This is because we'll be specifying an individual product as our qualifying item to trigger the promotion. Again, our purpose here is to make a "Buy Item A; Get Item B for Free" type of promotion, so lets continue with our steps.

  1. Under the "Applies if these Products are in the Basket" section, click on the first "NONE SELECTED" link or use the action wheel at the far right of it to Change the selection.*
  2. In the popup window, locate (use the search at the top if necessary) and select your qualifying product.*
(Remember, this is the product that they'll have to purchase in order to qualify for the other free item)
  3. Under the "Qty" field to the left of the selected product type in a 1*
  4. Finally click "Save" at the top right to save your progress.

By this point, you've set up the rules that need to be met on the shopper's cart in order to qualify for the free product. Next, we'll move on to the set up of the actual promotion offers.

  1. Click on the + icon next to "Promotion Offers" to expand that section
  2. Leave "Discount Offered" as a 0*
  3. The checkboxes underneath "Discount Offered" can also be left blank*
  4. We'll also be leaving "Exclude Products from these Manufacturers blank as well.*
  5. "Include Products in these Categories" will also be left blank*
  6. We'll be ignoring the "Discount Applies to this Product section for now as well.*
  7. We will also leave the "Bonus Reward Point" field at its default value of 0*

As mentioned, for this tutorial we'll be using the "Fixed Price Product" function in order to specify the free item that is given to the shopper. This function will let you specify a product in your store that will be automatically added to the shopper's cart when the promotion is activated. The added product will be added at a fixed price which in our case will be $0.

Note
The fixed price product will need to be in stock for this feature to work!

  1. Under Fixed Price Product click on the "Change" button
  2. In the popup window, locate (use the search at the top if necessary) and select your free product.*
(please see "Additional Information" note below)
  3. Set the "Fixed Price" to 0
  4. Click "Save" at the top right to set your changes.

Additional Information
When using the fixed price product, please be aware that the product itself will automatically be added to the shopper's cart without any intervention on their part. In other words, if the promotion is triggered and they are eligible for the fixed price product, it will simply appear as part of their order without any action needed from them (the shopper).

For this reason, it is important to note that products with options will not be shown when selecting the Fixed Price Product in the promotion manager in step 33 above. This is because - as mentioned - the item is automatically added to the cart without the shopper actively selecting it, so only products without options will be shown in the Fixed Price Product selection screen.

Please scroll down to the "Alternate Free Product Promotion Method" below for an alternative that you can use to offer products with options as the free item

At this point in the tutorial, you've configured the promotion to offer a free product when the shopper adds a qualifying item to their order. The final step in our process is to enable the promotion.

  1. At the top of the page, look for the "Warning This promotion is not enabled" message
  2. Click on the "click here to enable it now" link

Your promotion is now enabled and ready for use. However, due to all of the variables at play on the cart, it's a good practice to test the promotion and make sure it works as expected. Once you've confirmed that it's working as intended, share it with your customers and advertise your promo!

Alternate Free Product Promotion Method

As mentioned earlier in this article, the Fixed Price Product function will not allow you to specify a product that contains options as the fixed price item. This is because the item is never actually selected by the shopper but rather automatically added to their cart with no action at all needed from them. Therefore, there's no way for the customer to actually select any options on the product if there are any present.

As an alternative, the following steps will let you offer a free item if the product contains options. Starting from step 25 in the above steps of this tutorial:

  1. Click on the + icon next to "Promotion Offers" to expand that section
  2. Under "Discount Offered" enter 100 into the number field
  3. Next mark the Checkbox labeled "Is Percentage"
  4. The "Applies per Item" and "Free Shipping" checkboxes will be left blank*
  5. We'll also be leaving "Exclude Products from these Manufacturers blank as well.*
  6. "Include Products in these Categories" will also be left blank*

Rather than using the Fixed Price Product function, we'll be using the "Discount Applies to this Product" function instead. This function lets you apply the specified discount amount on a specific product. In our case, we're giving 100% discount of the price for the product we designate.

  1. Click on the "Change" button underneath "Discount Applies to this Product"
  2. In the popup window, locate (use the search at the top if necessary) and select your free product.*
  3. The rest of the settings will be left alone.*
  4. Click "Save" at the top right to set your changes.
  5. At the top of the page, look for the "Warning This promotion is not enabled" message
  6. Click on the "click here to enable it now" link

This alternative allows you to specify a product with options as the "free" item, but it is also vastly different than the Fixed Price Product function for the following reasons:

  • It's not automatic
The Fixed Price Product function automatically adds the item to the shopper's cart when the promotion triggers. When using this alternate method, the shopper will actively need to browse to and add the additional item to their cart in order to receive the discount. Therefore, you will need to direct the shoppers to select the right combination of items to get the promotion (via newsletters, banners, notices, etc)
  • It's not necessarily shown as a "Free" item
The Fixed Price Product function will automatically add the item at whatever you enter as its fixed price (0). Meaning that it will appear on the shopper's cart as $0.00. Using this alternate method however, the promotion is applying a 100% discount on the price of the product. Therefore, the product will appear on the cart as its regular price, and the price of the product will be discounted off the overall order. In other words, if the price of the free item is $19.99, it will appear in the cart as $19.99 as usual, but the order will then have a discount of $19.99 applied to the overall Total.

Aside from these reasons however, the "free" item can contain options and - even if the selected option incurs an additional charge - the 100% discount (on the item) will apply as needed.
