How Can I set Up my Payment Methods?

Setting up your payment methods is essential to your online store. 3dcart supports many types of payment methods which can be divided into two types of categories: Online and Offline Payments.

  • Online payments
allow you to accept real-time transactions via credit card transactions. For Online Payment Methods, you will need a merchant account, such as PayPal, Checkout by Amazon, or Authorize.net which will be used to process the actual payment transactions.
  • Offline payments
allow you to accept manually submitted payment such as check or money orders. You do not need a merchant account to use offline payments since there is no real-time credit card processing to be done.

This article will show you how to set up all payments and any options related to customize your online store to your needs.

Offline Payments

Setting up offline payments will allow you to accept checks, money orders, purchase orders, store pickups, etc. All offline payments will have to be manually processed once the order comes through. You can set the offline payment methods to go to the 'Unpaid' status automatically until the funds have been processed. This section will be broken into each method of payment and show you a step-by-step process of how to set up the more common offline methods.

Check

No Payment Necessary

Note
This method of payment is already setup for you in your account. We suggest you do not delete it as you may have customers that use gift cards. If necessary, the following steps can be used to re-create the "No Payment Necessary" method.

If a customer has a $0.00 balance during checkout, (let's say they use a gift card for the purchase), you can add a "No Payment Necessary" method.

To add a "No Payment Necessary" form of offline payment, log into your 3dcart Online Store Manager and, using the left hand navigation:

  1. Go to Settings ->Payment
  2. Once there, look towards the "Payment Methods" section and click on the "Select Payment" button
  3. On the next page, click on the "+Add New" button at the top right of the page.

Here's where you'll have the ability to specify the location ranges of the payment option (Country & State dropdowns), configure the monetary ranges of orders for the module (Order Amount Min & Order Amount Max) as well as limiting the payment option to a specific pricing group (Customer Group).

Important
For a "No Payment Necessary" situation, it's very important to set your order price ranges to 0 (for Order Amount Min) and 0 (for Order Amount Max).

This way, the method only appears for shoppers when their order is essentially free. It could be an order that was paid in full with a Gift Certificate, or perhaps a reward points item that included free shipping.

As long as the order itself falls between $0 and $0, it will show up on the order process so that the store has a way to allow checkout.

After configuring the limitation and range settings shown above, click on the "Payment Method" drop down and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the list where you'll see "Offline Payments" To continue our steps from above:

  1. Select "Custom" from the Payment Method dropdown list
  2. Click the "+Add Button" to add it to your store.

After the method is added to the store, it will be listed on your list of Payment options. To the far right of it, you will see two links:

  • Delete
Clicking this link will remove the method from your store (after confirming your request)
  • Settings
This link will open up additional configuration functions on the payment option where you can rename the method as needed.

Finally, to the farthest right of the module listing, you'll have the ability to turn it on or off.

Optional

As mentioned above, when clicking on the Settings, link you will have the option of changing the name of the method. For example, you may want to change it to say "No payment needed " or something similar.

You will also see "Advanced Settings" within this screen which will allow you to edit the payment method's ranges, location limitations, customer groups, and which status the orders will go into.

You will also have an area here to add description and confirmation messages for the payment method. These are usally optional, but here's how they'll work:

  • Description
The description will display next to the payment method
    Example: No payment necessary
  • Confirmation Msg
This will display to the customer once the purchase has been completed
Example: Thank you for your business! We'll deliver it soon!

Tip
Although we use the "Custom" method to recreate the store's No Payment Necessary option, you can use it for just about any other form of offline payment, including the ones referenced in this article so far.

In fact, when looking at the settings of a custom payment option, you'll also have the ability to add your own fields to the payment method if you'd like to capture more information from the shopper.

For example, the usual check method comes with a pre-built field allowing you to request a check number from the shopper. However, with a custom payment option, you can add as many of these fields as you'd like. (for example, name, check number, bank, etc)

Online Payment Methods

Ok, if you've read this far, thanks for staying with us! :-) Now we're up to the ONLINE payment methods.

Setting up online payment methods will allow you to accept credit cards, PayPal, and Checkout by Amazon. The advantage to this is that you do not have to process your payments manually, however, you do need to have an account with a payment gateway. 3dcart supports many payment gateways – this section will go through a step-by-step process on how to setup your online payment methods.

Payment Gateways

You must setup your payment gateway on your own if you do not already have an account. If you currently have a merchant account, but not a payment gateway, contact them and let them know you would like to be setup with one. If you do not have a merchant account, you can click here to help you get setup with one.

The Payment gateways 3dcart supports can be seen at the following URL:

Troubleshooting

If your payment options are not showing up at checkout or the payment is not working properly, there are several different settings you can double check to make sure everything has been configured properly.

Check off, in no particular order:

  • Make sure you have at least one payment option defined in Settings ->Payment and click on "Select Payment" in the Payment Methods section. As described before, this will list your store's payment options. Make sure the payment option you're looking at is Active.
  • Make sure the order's value is in within the range that your payment method can accept. For Example: If the range for your credit cards is to accept orders with minimum and maximum values between $0.00 - $200.00, and your purchase is $250.00, the payment method will not show up at checkout. Please see "Offline Payment Methods" or "Online Payment Methods" for more information.
  • Make sure the country/state the order is coming from is not on the Exclude list. Click on the payment method's Settings link and then look at "Advanced Settings" to review any exclusions that might have been configured.
  • Make sure the order is coming from an accepted Customer Group for that payment method. If this payment method is for all shoppers, make sure the customer group is set to ALL. Please see "Offline Payment Methods" or "Online Payment Methods" for more information.

Payment Methods Are Not Working Properly

  • If your payment options are not working properly, and you are using online methods, it could be possible your payment gateway is not configured correctly. A good indication of this would be that all credit card sales are being declined. As above, check your settings, but if this still does not allow the payment option to work, please contact support at 1-800-828-6650 for assistance.
