How do I control the default sorting of my products?

 

You can control how items are sorted on your Home page, Category pages, and Shop by Manufacturer pages. You can also allow your shoppers the option of sorting the view further on some of these pages with pre-set options like Price: Low to High, Price: High to Low and more.


Edit Order By

It all starts with the "Order By" option found in your Shift4Shop Store's Settings. This section allows you to set the sorting options that will be avialable on specific pages. To get to this area of the cart, use the following steps

Log into your Shift4Shop Online Store Manager

  1. Go to Settings >General >Store Settings
  2. Click on the "Product Display" tab found along the top
  3. Once there, look for the "Hide 'Order By'" option.

This option contains a checkbox that will allow you to hide the "Order By" options from pages altogether. This will remove the selectable drop down menu from the pages that allows the shopper/visitor to choose their own sorting. However, this article isn't about hiding the feature. It's about using the sorting options! So let's find out how.

Underneath the "Order By" checkbox, you'll find a link labeled "Edit Settings" Clicking on this link will let you rename and hide (if needed) the various sorting options available on the store as well as change the order that they appear in.

The available sorting options are as follows:

  • Order By
    This option sets the sorting for the page by acting as the default sorting action in the drop down menu that allows for sorting.

Important
While you can rename the "Order By" sorting option as needed, this one option should always be marked visible and with a sorting number of 0 to work correctly. Hiding it or changing its order number will result in the sorting function not actually sorting anything correctly.

  • Price: High to Low
    Items will be sorted in order from lowest priced to highest on the page.
  • Price: Low to High
    Items will be sorted in order from highest priced items to lowest on the page.
  • Name
    Items will be listed alphabetically by name
  • Newest
    Items will be listed in order from newest to oldest.
  • Oldest
    Items will be listed in order from oldest to newest

Tip
You can control how "old" or "new" a product is by editing the "Date Available" option in the product's Advanced Tab

  • Stock: Low to High
    Items will be listed in order from low inventory stock to higher
  • Stock: High to Low
    Items will be listed in order from high inventory stock to lower
  • Custom Field 1
    If you are using Extra Fields for your products, you can use this sorting option to allow sorting by extra field 1
  • Custom Field 2
    If you are using Extra Fields for your products, you can use this sorting option to allow sorting by extra field 2
  • Custom Field 3
    If you are using Extra Fields for your products, you can use this sorting option to allow sorting by extra field 3
  • Custom Field 4
    If you are using Extra Fields for your products, you can use this sorting option to allow sorting by extra field 4
  • Custom Field 5
    If you are using Extra Fields for your products, you can use this sorting option to allow sorting by extra field 5

Note:
If using the Custom Field sorting options described above, you should rename them to meet your store's label for the extra fields set in the Store Language section.

Also keep in mind that the sorting of these fields is based on text and not numerical values. Therefore sorting may have unexpected results when using numbers in these fields.

For example, fields with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 will be sorted (as text) to be 1, 10, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.

  • Avg Review
    Items will be listed in order from Higest Review Average to Lowest Review Average
  • Review Count
    Items will be listed in order from Highest number of reviews to lowest
  • Free Shipping
    Items listed as "Free Shipping" will be listed first.
  • On Sale
    Items listed as "On Sale" will be listed first.

Now that you understand what the available "Order By" options are, let's take a look at where they can be applied.


Home Page Sorting

To set the sorting that is used for the Home Page:

  1. Log into your Shift4Shop Online Store Manager
  2. Go to Settings >General >Store Settings and click on the "Product Display" tab found along the top

In the Home Page section, look for and set the "Home Page Sorting" as needed.

  1. Click "Save" at the top right to commit your change

Note:
The sorting on the home page cannot be changed by the shopper as with the other pages described here.

However, the sorting you select will work regardless of whether your items are physically marked as Home Specials or if they are Randomly assigned as Home Specials. For example, if you use Random Home Specials and sort based on Price from Low to High, Randomized items will still be listed in this order.


Category Page Sorting

Individual Categories can be set to use their own independent sorting. To set the sorting that is used for a Category Page:

  1. Log into your Shift4Shop Online Store Manager
  2. Go to Products >Categories
  3. Select the Category that you would like to edit and click on its name or look to the far right and click on its "Action >Details" button
  4. Once in the category's details page, click on the + Icon next to "Page Settings" to expand the selection.
  5. Under the "Page Settings" section, set the Default Products Sorting as needed
  6. Click "Save" at the top right to commit your change

Items on the Category Page will be shown in whatever sorting option you choose by default. Furthermore, your shoppers will have the added ability to sort the page themselves using the Sort By drop down menu located at the top of the page.


Browse by Manufacturer Sorting

The same type of default sorting can be applied to your store's "Browse by Manufacturer" pages

  1. Log into your Shift4Shop Online Store Manager
  2. Go to Settings >General >Store Settings
  3. Once there, click on the "Product Display" tab along the top of the page

In the Categories Settings section, look for and set the "Browse By Mfg / Default Sorting" drop down menu as needed and Save your changes.
