Knowledgebase: Changing DNS Records

Can I make DNS Record changes on my Shift4Shop Store Domain?

Yes!

Beginning with version 9 of the Shift4Shop service, store owners may now make basic MX and TXT record changes to their domain's DNS.

Important
The following information only applies to store domains which are using Shift4Shop's name servers in their DNS (dns1.3dcart.com, dns2.3dcart.com & dns3.3dcart.com). If your domain is using a different set of nameservers and is pointed to your Shift4Shop store via other means (such as a CNAME or A Record), the functions described in this article will not work. In these cases, you will need to make your changes with whatever service is handling your name servers.

To edit your store domain's MX and TXT information, follow these steps:

  1. Log into your Shift4Shop Online Store Manager
  2. Using the left hand navigation menu, go to Settings >General >Store Settings

The Store Settings section will be presented in a series of tabs at the top, with the default (selected) tab labeled "Store"

  1. Within the "Store" tab, look at the "Store Information" section and locate the "Manage DNS" button
(it's directly below the "Secure URL" field)
  2. Click the button to proceed.

The system will take a moment to generate a view of your store domain's current DNS information. Once this is done, you will be presented with a view of the domain's current MX and TXT information. From this view, you will have the ability to add or delete your store domain's MX and TXT Records.

Deleting a Record

To delete an existing record, simply click on the action wheel located to the far right of each entry and select "Delete" from the menu. You will be asked to confirm the deletion and the record will then be removed.

Note
You are unable to remove any A-Records that have been created. If you do create a record and need for it to be removed, please contact our Support Team so they can assist.

Adding a New Record

To Add a new record, click on the "Add New Record" button located at the top right of the page. A popup modal will appear Where you will be able to add your desired DNS record. Depending on the type of record you're creating, your available fields will change slightly to accomodate your settings.

  • Record Type: MX
    • TTL
The record's TTL (Time to Live) parameter. Default is 3600 (seconds)
    • Record Name (E-Mail Address Domain Name)
For MX records, the record name should simply be your domain name
    • Mail server host
The name of the mail server the MX record will direct your domain mail to.
    • Preference
The numerical priority for the mail server. The lower the number, the higher the priority
  • Record Type: TXT
    • TTL
The record's TTL (Time to Live) parameter. Default is 3600 (seconds)
    • Record Name (host)
For TXT records, the record name should simply be your domain name
    • Text Data
The content of the text data that is being added.
  • Record Type: A
    • TTL
The record's TTL (Time to Live) parameter. Default is 3600 (seconds)
    • Record Name (Host)
For A records, the record name should be the name of the sub-domain the record is being created for. For example: docs.domain.com.
    • Host IP Address
The IP Address the sub-domain will be pointing to.
  • Record Type: CNAME
    • TTL
The record's TTL (Time to Live) parameter. Default is 3600 (seconds)
    • Record Name (Alias Name)
For CNAME records, the record name should be the name of the sub-domain the record is being created for. For example: docs.domain.com
    • Alias for domain
The named element that the sub-domain will be pointing to. For example: store-domain-com.3dcartstores.com
  • Record Type: SRV
    • TTL
The record's TTL (Time to Live) parameter. Default is 3600 (seconds)
    • Domain Name
      Your domain name
    • Target host
The name of the host providing the service for the record.
    • Protocol
The transportation protocol used by the service.
    • Priority
The numerical priority for the service record. The lower the number, the higher the priority
    • Weight
If two or more services have the same priority, the weight number is used to determine which line should come first. The higher the number, the earlier the SRV record will look at it.
    • Port
The port number for the service (optional)

Important
The system will not accept @ or @@ as the record name. If your provider's instructions specify these for the record name, try substituting your domain name in place for @ (or @@) instead and check to see if that will work for the service you're creating the records for.

Once you are done entering your record information, click "Save" and it will be added to your store domain's DNS information.

Note
Be aware that changes will be made to your DNS record (on Shift4Shop) quickly. However, due to propagation, you may need to wait for the changes to be reflected across the Internet before they are apparent. Propagation time can take up to 24 hours in some cases (although it's usally much quicker than this).
