Why do I get a browser cookies error when adding items to the cart?

A common setup that some merchants employ is to have their Shift4Shop store separate from another online presence. For example, they will have a main site at maindomain.com and they will link to their Shift4Shop store at store.maindomain.com. This allows merchants to maintain their primary domain as their main web presence, while using the Shift4Shop store for the housing of their products and checkout functions.

By using this setup, merchants can link/list products from their Shift4Shop store on their main site, and shoppers will click through to the Shift4Shop store for the actual cart creation/ordering process.

When using this setup however, you must enable a setting in your Shift4Shop Online Store Manager that will allow for the cart to be created when linked to from an external site. Failure to do so may result in your shoppers receiving a browser error indicating that their browser cookies are not allowed.

To correct this, and configure the setting, please use the following steps.

  1. Log into your Shift4Shop Online Store Manager.
  2. Using the left hand navigation menu, go to Settings >General >Store Settings.
  3. Next, click on the "General" tab found along the top of the page.

Once you arrive at the General Tab page, look towards the bottom left for a section labeled "Other Options" and make sure that there's a mark in the "Allow external 'Add to cart' links" checkbox.

  1. Click "Save" at the top right of the page to commit your changes.

Once set, this setting will allow the Shift4Shop Shopping Cart software to create the order from an externally hosted link to your products.
