How do I import Product Reviews via CSV?

 

With Shift4Shop's built-in Product Review function, you have the ability to import reviews to your store. This can be helpful if you are migrating from another service and you would like to have your reviews from your older platform appear on your new platform with Shift4Shop.

Note
You must first make sure the Shift4Shop Product Review module is enabled for your store. To enable the module:

  1. Log into your Shift4Shop Online Store Manager
  2. Using the left hand navigation menu, go to Modules
  3. Then, using the search bar at the top, search for "Product Reviews" to view the module

Mark the "Enable Product Reviews" checkbox and click on "Save" at the top right to commit your changes.

To generate the CSV file needed for import:

  1. Log into your Shift4Shop Online Store Manager
  2. Using the left hand navigaiton menu, go to Products >Reviews
  3. Next, click on the "Export/Import" button found at the top right of the page
  4. In the Import section of the page (on the right hand side) click on the "Sample File" link provided (under "File Input")

This sample file will be formatted for importing back to your store with data. The file will contain the following column headers:

  • reviewid
    This is the database ID for the review record. It is assigned by the store and should be left blank for new reviews
  • id
    This is the ID/SKU for the product that the review will pertain to.
  • catalogid
    This is the catalogid for the product that the review will pertain to
  • user_name
    This will be the display name of the customer entering the review
  • user_email
    This will be the reviewer's email address
  • user_city
    This will correlate to the reviewer's city
  • short_review
    This column will be for the short post/subject line of the review
  • long_review
    This column will be for the fullly written out review itself
  • rating
    This column will be used for the rating (1 to 5) of stars rated for the review
  • review_date
    This will be the date of the review
  • approved
    This column will denote if the review is approved or not
    This is a toggle value of either zero (0) or one (1)
    • 0 = No
    • 1 = Yes
  • userid
    This will be the nemerical ID (in your store's database) of the customer's record.
    If you do not know this information, you may use a zero (0)
  • userip
    This is the user's recorded IP address when the review was submitted.
    If you do not know this information, you may leave it blank
  • rev_verified
    This column will denote if the user is a verified puchaser of the item or not.
    This is a toggle value of either zero (0) or one (1).
    • 0 = No
    • 1 = Yes
  • rev_helpful
    This column will let you record the number of helpful ratings that the review has garnered
  • rev_votes
    This column will let you record the total number of helpfulness votes given to the review

After you've finished editing your import file, save it as a CSV file and continue with these steps to import it to your store.

  1. Log into your Shift4Shop Online Store Manager
  2. Using the left hand navigaiton menu, go to Products >Reviews
  3. Next, click on the "Export/Import" button found at the top right of the page
  4. Click on the Browse button under the Import section (on the right hand side) to locate your saved CSV file.
  5. Then, click on the "Import Data" link to have the reviews added to your store.

Important
Please be aware that the import function has a limit of 30 megabytes. If the CSV you are trying to import is larger than this, please split it up into separate, smaller files no larger than 30MB each.

Incidentally, you can also export your store's existing reviews using the Export Data options located on the left hand side of the page.

Additional Information
The actual import/export process takes place "behind the scenes" of your store's software to prevent it from interfering with your store's active processes. By allowing the function to work in the background, you can go to other pages of the admin and still work on your store while importing or exporting large files.

During the process, you will be taken to the Import/Export Status page which will display a grid layout of your recent imports and exports. The progress column will show you the progress of the import.

At the far right of each grid item will be an action wheel that contains the following options:

  • Download: Allows you to download the CSV file after a successful import/export
  • Notify Me: For larger, more time consuming files; this option will let you input your email address so that you will receive a notice once the import/export is complete.
  • View Log: Allows you to review the log of the import/export so you can see how many items were updated, inserted or if any records failed.
  • Cancel: Allows you to cancel an impending import/export
  • Retry: If for some reason the import/export fails, you may use this option to attempt a retry of the file.
  • Delete: Use this to delete the record altogether from the status page.

This will be present in all of the store's Export/Import functions.

Please make sure your store's secure URL is pointing to your Shift4Shop store.
